Programming and Problem Solving with C++: Comprehensive Edition

  1. Briefly, this book offers beginning students help where they don’t need it–thus confusing them and undermining their confidence–and withholds help where they do need it–thus impeding their progress and–again–undermining their confidence. The author, not the student, is always the book’s center of attention.

I heartily recommend this text to those sadistic teachers who get off by flaunting their own facility in the subject they teach, in contrast to their beginning students.

This book is about the worst thing you could throw at a beginning student.

I suggest that you fire any professor who uses this text! C++ is a HUGE topic. A beginner needs to get a grasp around a subset of the syntax before they are introduced to all the hard details and nitty-gritty. This books goes into too many details when it should be more coherent and simplified.

There are much better books available, such as Savitch’s “Absolute C++,” which is not only far more coherent, but actually uses a color OTHER THAN BLUE.

If you are going to use this book, I suggest changing schools first.

With nearly 1100 pages and weighing around 3 lbs. this is one of the most worthless books on C++. It does not even cover operator overloading. Vectors or other other containers STL an advanced topic but that is not even mentioned.

It is amazing that authors can fill up so much space without covering some of the most fundamental concepts of the language.

  5. A friend of mine who used this book at another school recommended it to me. Once you try this book, instead of the ones that say “we are the only way to program c++,” you will know why this book is the Chosen One, why it is the Great One, and why it is the People’s Choice. It is THE BEST C++ Prgramming Book there ever was! Honestly, in all seriousness, I have found this book to be alot better than those selected by my college (namely the Dietel Series).
